A di threw hard cover books at their heads, i was sent to the pit just for making an unauthorized water call. another thing about water, some recruits were made to do bends and thrusts after a 5 mile hump just because they drank water from their ccanteens without asking permission. a few recruits been held back a week in training for violations they never done, a guy was blanket partied, he ran to the DI's duty hut, banged on the door, and the DI laughed in his face and slammed the door shut. my question, is, why the army, nay, and air force dont use these sadistic tactics but the marine corps feels they have the right to do so?

Probably bc they have to go to hellish wars and kick in doors and do nasty things. It's all preparation for what's to come. It's not ballet school ya know.

Evidently, there are extremes to both sides of this issue. I was in Marine Corps boot camp in 1968. It was true that DIs did occasionally beat recruits. It was always against regulations but unless there was an officer present (which was not often) DIs did not follow this rule. From what I saw, the recruits getting beaten often did not learn from the first experience and were struck again and again. Those who could learn, did so without physical brutality. Also I question the motives of an abusive DI. An abusive DI is no different than an abusive parent or an abusive spouse. It really is not about the perceived offense or out of love, it is about poor self control, poor tolerance/patience, substance abuse and mental illness. Marines do need to maintain their status as the best military force in the country. Physical demands, training and esprit di corps are, were and always will be what make the Marine Corps unique.

Some of what you talk about contravenes current USMC guidelines, but at the end Marines find that they're better prepared to deal with the hell of combat than members of other services, so a little pain now saves a lot of blood later. The primary purpose of boot camp is not to teach you how to operate the equipment but to reorient you from a civilian life in which concepts like "it doesn't make sense to me" about water intake, for instance, lead you to drink, to a military mode of thinking: "The chain of command are looking after the logistics, and say not to drink. I both hope and assume they know what they're doing." Often in military service getting an explanation or hesitating or questioning orders will get people killed. So now you train for that basic life, and later when that's in the depths of your mindset you can add back the more refined layers of thought. That's why what you're in is called "basic" training.

Marine boot camp is designed for one reason and one reason alone. Do what you are told, when you are told without hesitation. The Marines have existed since 1776 and have a very proud heritage so they must be doing something right. Maybe the Marines was the wrong choice for you. Perhaps you should have joined the Army, the Salvation Army that is, then you can do things on your terms.

If these things really happened, then you should be reporting the incidents to the appropriate military commander's office - not making ambiguous and inflammatory comments here on YA.

While it's true that the Marines train hard (for obvious reasons - these tactics and training could save your life if you were captured by the enemy), there ARE still guidelines as to what is, and is not, appropriate and/or excessive.

If you're going to make a report, be sure you have proof/details. If these things really did happen, and you feel as if you can't take it, do your fellow Marines a favor and bow out now, before one of them is looking to you to cover their back in combat. I'm not judging you - not everybody is cut out for this stuff. I'm not.

If you can hang in there, you will be one of the few, the proud, the Marines. BOOYAH!

If you're still in basic, I don't believe you'd be allowed to post here.

And the marines are meant to be the elite. They got into the harshest combat zones and fight the heaviest battles. You have to be disciplined, tough, and able to follow commands to the letter. Not being able to obey could result in the injury death of you or your fellow soliders.

It's obvious you can't hack it...so good luck getting booted for poor performance. I'm sure there's a spot for you at your local McDonald's.
