I would have my spouse talk to them and let them know under any circumstances will you guys allow Christmas to be ruined and let them know that if their behavior does not change you guys will not be spending Christmas with them in the future. Other then that just try and stay positive throughout the day. Trust me show a united front and things will change, if they chose to see their families on Christmas.

It's one day out of the year and it shouldn't be who wins or loses. It should be a day that you are thankful for the things you have and the fact that you have a family to spend the holidays with. Yes, families are difficult...you've got a group of people with all different personalities and opinions all together trying to blend. The best thing you can do is to be happy and not their bad attitudes spoil your Christmas. This is also the best way to "win". Staying happy no matter what is said or what subject is brought up. Sometimes when this happens at my MIL house, I just go out and take a walk to distance myself for a few minutes. Try that ...it helps.

If in your home tell them that the rules of the house do not allow for bad tempermental people on Christmas Day and if they want to be crabby maybe they should be that way at home. If you are a guest at their home, be gracious and stay calm. If this doesn't work ask them if they would prefer to be alone on Christmas and be prepared to leave if need be.

Don't spend Christmas with them. I made this decision last year after yet another awful day with the inlaws. I feel much more relaxed and happy this christmas knowing I won't be subjected to their crap. Give yourself a Merry Christmas and refuse to attend their gathering!

"Without causing a major ruckus" and also this point, before you go walking around on eggshells like your relatives most likely won't do for you consider this:
You are also an in-law ;)
Best to not be referring to in-laws as outlaws...get my point? By the way, what does winning have to do with celebrating CHRISTmas?

Let go of the "We don't want them to think they have won" game. No one wins with this type of attitude.
Try to enjoy the conversation, food, and company. If it becomes too unbearable, leave early for another party, let them know you have other plans for that day , when you arrive. If things turn out nice, stay longer.
