If you want to be a police officer, you have to be really dedicated to it. It isn't a job that everyone can do and it can suck, A LOT!
Forget about the academy. It's just lots of running and being yelled at. I've always said that the academy was the easy part, and it was.
Being a police officer means you're going to miss being able to go out with your friends like you used to. When your working the midnight shift on a Saturday, you're not going to be able to chill with them.
People are going to fight you when you try to arrest them, or for just being. You're trying to do a job, and people want you dead, and I don't mean that in a funny sense.
You're going to run into places that have people running out of it for some reason, usually because there's a crazy guy inside, shooting people or something like that.
There will be days that you miss holidays. Can't work Halloween and bring your kids out, because you're arresting teenagers spray painting and egging the town. Can't enjoy Valentines day because you're working a double though the day and night.
Foget about X-mas. Even cops with kids can't be home in the morning to open presents becasue all the senior officers are given privelige to be home.
How about pulled chared bodies from homes that have just burnt down. You'll never forget that smell of burned flesh. I know I haven't.
Maybe the baby that has died at the hands of her alcoholic/drug addicted mother. Those cigarette burns on her body won't disappear from your nightmares.
That's the other thing. You're not going to have dreams anymore, you're going to have nightmares. Most will be about you, being shot, or something along those lines.
You'll think twice about being a cop when you walk into a drug house that has a floor that is moving. The cockroaches are everywhere and when you leave, you have to shake out your uniform just to get them off of you.
Than there are the kids. You won't forget the baby wearing yesterday's news paper as a diaper, or how there's more beer in the fridge than food or milk for the baby.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my job. I love geting up everyday and helping how and where I can, but police have a high depression, alcoholic/drug use/suicide rate, more than any other job in America, and probably the world.
You sure you want my job?

Go to college and get a degree in anything. CJ is not a prerequisite and will only help a little. But if you have a business degree you will be a leg up when it comes time to promote. The Feds like Accounting and Science Majors. I know a ton of cops with CJ degrees who are left high and dry when they cannot pass a background or physical.

Application, interview, psych. evaluation, polygraph, physical fitness test or requirements, interview board, and then hiring. Then, police academy, possibly a "mini-academy" within the department, and FTO (Field Training Officer) program.

It usually takes a long time to get hired. That whole process usually lasts a year or so.
