I'm currently an agnostic -- but know the answer to this question.
Most (but not all) Protestants believe that sin is sin -- there is only one kind.
Catholics -- and some protestants -- believe that there are different types of sin. For Catholics, there is Original Sin, Mortal Sin and Venial Sin. We are born with Original Sin -- which is washed away by baptism. Mortal Sin is very serious. If we die with mortal sin or original sin on our souls, Catholics believe we go to Hell. Venial sin is less serious. Dieing with venial sins on our souls will not send us to Hell. However, we can't go to Heaven with sins on our soul. Therefore, we go to Purgatory -- where the sins are purged from our soul before we are allowed into Heaven.
There is scripture that backs up this view -- however it is in the part of the Bible that Martin Luther edited out of the Bible -- which explains why the beliefs of Protestants differ from those of Catholics.

Hi, to an accurate answer of this question think in the root of the Sin and who says what is a sin or not.
We know the sin because the law of God gave to Moshe, there says that exist some kinds of sins and every kind have a special way to be redeemed but the blood of Jesus is for all the sins and all the people.
Some sins are of death like speak against the holy Spirit or God (Mat 12:31-32) or broke the ten commanders (even the shabbat). Others Sins are done with out will so the sinner ignore the sin.
Jesus said that fornication is the worst sin because is done against the self body and of course the homosexuality it is also.

A sin is a sin. There is no "big" sin and "small" sin. It's all the same in God's eyes. It's sinful humans that say one is bigger than the other and should be punished in a different manner.
It's a hard one to wrap your mind around, I understand that. I am a Christian and I know what God says about sin and I still find myself saying the same thing that you said above all the time.

All sins are the same, and receive the same punishment if not wiped away by Jesus.
As for the child, there is this thing called "the age of accountability" where they are innocent until they are old enough to know right from wrong. This is approximately age five. Some people will never reach this age since it is a mental age not a chronological one.

The tricky part of your question is that the kid will likely realize that stealing a cookie is wrong, and will stop that practice. Hitler, regardless of if he knew that killing thousands was wrong, continued to do so.
True repentance comes from completely turning away from that sin. If I screw up and say I am sorry, yet continue the same screw up, was I really sorry about it in the first place?
Christ's death did not absolve us from all responsibility, as some claim. We still must confess our sins and repent (turn away from).

in the beginning, Roman Catholics don't think in distinctive ranges of Hell, and confident, RCs are Christian. traditionally, Christianity has constantly taught that the degree of sin is barely a human thought. ANY quantity of sin probably separates us from the perfection of God. for this reason, a repentant criminal would be closer to the dominion of Heaven than the useful preacher with a secret. notice the word "would." it is not as much as us to decide. Likewise, goodness is goodness everywhere it particularly is chanced on. How dare all people presume to decide a Buddhist monk? there is not any justification for such an attitide, for the reason that for the time of itself is a sin. people who call themselves Christian ought to end and think of a 2d. Are you specific which you in my view understand and understand the sum entire of God's revelation to mankind? Are you able to decide others? I say, believe in God to do His artwork, and shelter your individual stuff!
