Has anyone ever had their dogs nails cut and they do something to the vein or heard of the procedure. We got her when she was 3 and she wasn't taken care of and her nails were growning under when we brought her home from the pound.

My dogs nails grow very fast and I need to trim them weekly. My sister said it is caused by two things. One her food is very good making her hair and nails strong. Second I am disabled and she does not get out side for the pavement to ware them down at all. Nail clippers are not that expensive I suggest that you get a pair and try to do it every week. It will take a long time before you get them where you want them as you can not cut them where you want them but they will get shorter with time and patience.

I'm going through some pains right now helping my dog heal because her nail curled and grew into her skin so it's infected. I cut it, put triple ointment antibiotic, and soak it once a day in Epsom salt. Believe me, it's very important to keep up with it.

There is a styptic (sp?) powder that you can buy so that if you accidentally cut your dog's nail and it bleeds, you just put the powder on it to stop the bleeding and help it heal. Just look at the nail very closely and you should see the vein that you need to avoid. I cut it about a half cm away from where I see the vein. Good luck and don't be forgetful like me :(

If you go to a small owner operated grooming shop they will probably dremel your pup's nails for a few dollars. As long as you don't put the dog down on the floor or allow other dogs to come in contact with it there shouldn't be a problem. Don't walk in, call first to be sure there is a convenient time for the groomer. I used to do puppies for free if they were a breed that was going to require regular professional grooming. A good way to get a new customer when it is old enough.

You can trim your dog's nails. However, you need to be careful not to cut too deeply or you will hit the "quick". This is very painful for the dog and they will vigorously resist any future attempt to trim their nails.

One of the best ways to keep a dogs nails in check is to take them on regular walks on a city sidewalk. It acts like a natural nail file and will keep them at just the right length.

Some dogs just have fast-growing nails. Exercise on cement will help some. If you can cut the nails yourself, try doing it weekly.

Failing that, if your dog has to be anesthetized at the vets for any reason, ask them to whack her nails right back while she's under.

Well it sounds like maybe your dogs quicks have grown pretty long and the groomer can only go so far. I would suggest learning how to clip them your self. If you are to worried about quicking them then ask your vet how to do it. Also we used Dremmel tools at our clinic to do their nails. We would clip off the main nails, and then dremmeled the nail down almost to the quick. It makes it smoother and gets the nails as short as possible. It also is less likely to quick them this way (though it still can happen if you go to far). Though dogs usually dont like it becuase it tickles they sometimes get use to it. You just have to keep working with them. Good luck

How often do you walk your dog? The wear from walking your dog on paved surfaces will help keep the nails from growing long so quickly. A nail file for dogs, so to speak. You still need to have them clipped from time to time but this will help.

When a dogs nails are long ,it is a sign the dog is not being exercised/walked enough. A dog that is walked enough will wear its own nails to the proper length.

If you cut your dogs nails a small amount, a few times a week, then the quick will actually retract. Then you will be able to trim the nails shorter and shorter.

Make sure the groomer is cutting the nails every time and ask that they be filed also.
