Did you enter a lottery? Why would someone send you a check if you didn't? The check is fake. The bank you called is part of the scam. They instruct you to cash the check at your bank and then send them back part of the money for processing fees. The check does not clear at your bank and you are resposible for the money. Very old scam but there are still many gullible people out there. SCAM SCAM SCAM. Tear it up and do not under any circumstance send them any personal information.

I am a retired Police Officer that has investigated Internet scams and frauds for years. Global-Link, Global International, U.K. and Australian Football Lotteries are Nigerian scams. The check is a counterfeit and when the bank finds out you are held liable. The FBI in your area should have a web site that you can send the offending email to. Call your local office and explain. Do not cash the check you could also be held criminally liable. This is an old Nigerian scam. They use IP servers from countries other than their own. These scams are done out of Internet cafes where scammers sit for hours every day sending out thousands of scams. One of the most popular songs in Nigeria is about scamming Americans out of their money. The most common source of them getting your email is from on line survey companies and the " We will Pay you to take surveys" sites. They sell your information to other survey companies and no one checks to see if the companies that advertise on this sites are legitimate. It is a very old scam perpetrated on new victims every day. They want you to send the money by an money wire service, right? You keep a little and they keep the majority. The amount you keep won't make the down payment on the lawyer you will need to get yourself out of trouble if the bank that cashes the check turns you over to you local District Attorney.

I get notifications all the time in my hotmail accounts telling me I've won the lottery in the UK, or wherever, and would I please verify the information they have, but, in the meantime, would I please refrain from telling anyone about my winnings until I actually have the winnings in my hand? Meantime I can print out all the info on-screen, fill it in, and fax it back. (??) Just remember, not a word to anyone, please.
It's a scam, pure and simple, and I've been filing it all under "G".
Like one answerer said, have your bank verify it to see what's what, if you wish.
There's so much going on with these mailings, you have to look for the fine print. I don't even do the "Publishers Clearing House" any more, because if you don't order (no purchase necessary my foot!) they just throw your entry form in the garbage.
A scam is all it is.
