If others are making cookies, they will be trying to outdo everyone with their decorating skill. At work, everyone brings in cookies and they are placed on a table for all to eat. I make simple short-breads in huge quantities, undecorated in a large paper towel lined box. They are not pretty, but no one can pass the table without grabbing a few. At the end of the day, some of the pretty cookies are still sitting there, but the empty box of short-breads tells me whose were the most popular. You can make them a few days ahead and store them in airtight containers until needed. Next year, people will be asking ahead of time if you are going to be bringing more of those butter cookies again.

They'll be just fine, make sure they're stored in an airtight container. As to tasting goos that starts when you make them, if you've had that can of baking powder there in the cabinet for ooohhhhh 8 years it's time to buy fresh. Airtight and you'll be Golden! The one trick to use if you're afraid of dryness is the old brown sugar trick, a slice of fresh bread in with the cookies

Make them, let them cool *completely*, then freeze them. Can you decorate them the night before you need to take them to work? Decorated cookies don't freeze too well, and if you dont' freeze them, they will be stale by next week.

you can keep in a tupperware to keep fresh and then decorate them on Wed night that will work. Or depending on what time you go to work during the day you can make the dough and freeze it pull it out and bake that morning or day and then you have freshest cookies.
