I recommend shopping around some Indian stores in your area now before you go to India. Then when you get there you'll have an opportunity to see what the costs of those same goods would be if you purchased them in your home country. Look for things that don't get exported, old DVDs or super new releases, clothing, jewelry, regional items like dandiya sticks or navratri clothing and religious items. Keep in mind your exchange rate to properly gauge if you can get a better deal at home. Don't burden yourself with items that are easily acquired in your home country for a comparable price. If you are interested in cooking, why not bring back cookbooks from Indian authors, DVDs of cooking shows and special ingredients or utensils that are not easily available in your home country. Take the opportunity to try new foods and perhaps learn how to make them. Try looking for cooking classes that you can attend. It will make your vacation much more memorable.
