I want to scan old black and white photos. I have a visioneer 4400 scanner. After I scan them I want to be able to burn them to CD so I can take them to like a Wal-Mart or Walgreens and print them since my printers always seems to print crappy. After I scan them and then have to export them, a box always pops up that says JPEG/Flash Pix compression Quality and it has a slider from low to high( 0-100), wghat does this mean? and what would I set it on...Thanks

the quality determines the quality of the photo that the scan will reproduce.
Since you want to be able to reprint the photo, you want it set high.
If its set to low, the picture may come out fuzzy (pixelated) when they print it.
However, if you set it too high, the file size may be too big for a disc. (this all depends on your scanner software settings, and you may have to try few times to get the best size setting)

something to keep in mind, it's easier to resize a large picture into a smaller one while keeping some of the photo details.

For best printing results use the highest quality setting you can.

The Compression Quality is the Quality of the photo itself.. how sharp do you want the photo to be?? The lower on the scale you choose the smaller the file, the less the pixels and the more grainy.. BUT at the high end it can also look fuzzy... your best bet is to tkae one photo.... then save it under different names sev times.. try a setting of 50..then 75 then 100 and then go and make a test print at wallgreens... it will only cost you 29 cents a photo and then you can see which setting you like the best.. personally I keep it around 75-85% for the older photos and 95-100% for todays photos.

Good Luck!

The higher the setting the better the resolution. High resolution would be needed if you are planning to make large prints (8x10 or larger). The only problem with this is the higher the resolution the bigger the file is. As long as you don't have a lot of photos, storage on a CD with the high resolution should be fine.
