I've also been told to avoid caffeine - my sympathies are with you, it took me a long time to adjust. I drink decaff and its fine, you can get some really lovely decaff coffee and tea now and I don't notice the difference at all.

If its upsetting your stomach though, why not try switching to herbal teas. You get that same comforting feeling of a hot drink, but none of the discomfort. Twinnings do really nice fruit ones or peppermint tea is good for your stomach.

I get SVT, for which I've been told to avoid caffeine and I really missed tea until I discovered decaf - it's not QUITE as nice as normal tea but experiment with brands until you find a good one. Some taste cardboardy, but do persevere. Twinings are quite good. Organic brands are better than supermarket versions as they don't strip all the flavour by using chlorine.

I'm not a huge fan of decaf coffee personally, as it sometimes loses that lovely nutty flavour, but if coffee sometimes effects your tum, then steering away from the caffeine will help a lot. Douwe Egberts is passable.

Decaf would certainly be better - but be aware "decaf" teas and coffees don't have to be totally caffeine free (just reduced by maybe 90%), so you should still drink them in moderation.

However, you should also be advised that some studies have linked decaf coffee with heart attacks and increased cholesterol (see link below).

I always drink De-caff now, I've never been able to taste the different between the two.

My other half though he could taste the difference, but I gave him de-caff for a month wtthout telling him and he never noticed at all!
