Education is knowing how to learn. The educated person is open minded and tolerant, and has a knowledge base that makes it easy to access new knowledge. Being educated involves an understanding of society and the world, including economic, political, environmental, social, and other aspects.
There has been such a knowledge explosion in the last 20 years or so that it is no longer possible to look at education merely as "knowing stuff". There is just too much to know. Education involves knowing how and where to find the information you need. It is impossible to know everything. Education involves learning how to make use of information, how to interpret it, how to use the experitse of others, and how to continue learning throughout life. Education happens from the cradle to the grave.
A well educated person is no longer the person who knows the most things, particularly when it comes to science and technology today. An educated person knows how to learn, how to find information, how to use it and apply it.

Vivekananda's definition of education is one of remarkable insight
Education, he said, “is the manifestation of perfection already in man” he said, that it must provide 'life-building, man-making, character-making assimilation of ideas.' The ideal of this type of education would be to produce an integrated person--one who has learned how to improve his intellect, purify his emotions, and stand firm on moral virtues and unselfishness.
