I've had mine done for years and it's fine. The thing is that it does hurt and it swells which some people can't understand why you would go through that to wear a piece of metal in your tongue. It's all about self expression.

If you want to do it and you have the commitment to take care of it until it's healed then do it. Like your dad said, it's your body and you have to live with it.

Personally I think it gives off the impression that you are self expressive and you don't give a **** about what other people think about you and that can only be a good thing as far as I'm concerned. If any guy thinks it's a sex thing then just tell him where to go.

Small minded freaks just piss me off.

Oh, and yeah, as a word of warning, don't do it yourself. There is a vein in your tonuge that if you hit you can die from. Go to a professional and pay whatever they ask, as long as it's a good establishment. Go to www.bmezine.com for more advice and experiences. You will also be able to research a good piercer in your area.

Good Luck!

I got my tongue pierced earlier this year in Philly by a "Professional" (not a back alley establishment) and I have absolutely no problems.

The main point is to follow the directions explicitly.

After 6-10 weeks go back and have a shorter stud put in your piercing. The longer studs can chip your teeth.

make sure you rinse with the Alcoholic free Crest mouth-wash
or Kosher salt...not table salt or peroxide.

As far as giving the wrong impression....Only you can give off the wrong impression. Anyone who judges you by a piercing is very narrow minded.

I work in Corporate America and know that it is not acceptable, so I have a pink flesh colored ball on the top of my stud as not to draw too much attention when I am talking. On the weekend or holiday I may change it back to the stainless steel of some other funky color.

have fun....live life!!!

I would not do it. I had mine pierced a few years ago and am still suffering the bad effects it had on my teeth. My tounge also swelled because they pierced it with something other than stainless steel and I had to have it cut out in a neighboring state. I was stupid enough to put another stud in and kept it for 2 years. My teeth in the back are chipped and I've had to get extensive dental work. It also affected my speech. If you want to make a statement with your body, do it with your hair and clothes. That way you won't permanantly damage your body.
I would wait until you are at least 18 and if you still want it, then maybe think about it. If you do get it, be sure and go to a reputable piercer. Maybe you could pierce something else like your navel or more in your ears instead?

well, i have my tongue done, and it didn't hurt the swelling only lasted for about 3-4 days and then i was back to normal..... no-one knows I even have it unless I tell them because I don't speak with my mouth wide opened. If it hurt the first time, then be prepared for it to hurt worse the second time, because you will be piercing through scar tissue. Ans make sure that as soon as you can you at least change the balls to the plastic or acrylic ones because they are less damaging to your teeth. I have had mine a couple years and don't have any damage at all to my teeth. Good Luck, but definately inform your parents.

In my area it is hard to get anything done without parents permission, so unless you go to a non-perfessional or do it yourself, you may not beable to go behind your parent's back, but I wouldn't prefer it because you can contract diseases and get really raunchy infections. *ick!*

I have had my tongue pierced for 4 years now. It's preference really. I say, think about it. You had it done before, you know what it is like, why waste the money (in my area $45) to get it done AGAIn if you are just going to take it out?

Btw, swelling is normal. It takes a little time for it to heal. Each person is different, but it took me a couple weeks before I got used to it. Also, watch what you eat. I was stupid and ate steak the day i got mine done and it ripped. *Ouch!*

Also, do your research. If you want it bad enough and you give your parents possitive information and a professional with a good reference, they may become more comfortable with the idea.

Well, you definitely shouldn't do it behind your parents back. If you can get it when you turn 17 without their permission and you want to do it, then do it. Your dad is right, it is your body! I've had tons of piercings and although piercing my labret was the least painful (and it didn't hurt that it looked great with my facial features) I would recommend a tongue piercing or a belly button piercing. These two piercings allow you to express yourself, but can also easily be hidden.

Don't go behind your parent's back to do this. You'll damage or destroy their trust in you. Talk to them first, explain your reasons, tell them you want to do this safely, ask for their input. Then consider carefully what they say. You'll show that you're more mature, rational, and adult.

Sneaking off to have it done would show that you know that this is wrong, and that you don't think their input is important.

But if you had a bad reaction the first time, why not consider a different piercing this time? Belly button, maybe eyebrow? Just try to not look like those people who wear a tackle box on their face, OK?

Hey, that's your decisions. Remember, after it heals you can always take it out. And it was dumb of you to take it out before it healed, it could have been infected and your could have trapped the infection in by closing the holes

if you do, go to a good place to get it done. The piercing is pretty easy to hide, just don't be around for a few days cause it might be swollen and you'll talk funny.

Don't click or play with it, that's the most important part to hiding it.

Even if they give you grief, you should keep the lines of communication open with your parents. Swelling is inevitable with tongue piercings, it is going to happen to you again. Suck on ice chips this helps with the swelling and discomfort (the swelling usually subsides in a week). I know, I've had mine done. No pain, no gain.
