Thankyou to those who have already replied. My wife is typing for me as even that is too painful.I am already taking 1500 mgs of glucosamine daily, and at present the max allowed doseage of Iberbrufen. The last doctor also prescribed Meloxicam, but it did not help at all,in fact I felt worse,so have returned to 4 daily doses of iberbrufen 600mgs (total of 2400),until I see another specialist tomorrow.Although the pain, aching, swelling is constant there is occasionally, sharp acute pain. This is really unbeareable to live with,I am not able to really use my hands at all.Any suggestions welcome Thankyou.

do you have any problems also with your ankles? either way, there is an odd disease, that often is misdiagnosed as arthritis,,,,, that effects some people lungs, but other people get the swelling, in hands or feet or both,,,,, it starts with a s, as in scar,,,,,something, if you have symptoms other then lungs, its more easily treated and while painful less serious,,,,,, sorry i cant be more specific with the name,,,,,,, my ex husband went threw this years ago,,,, was misdiagnosed with arthritis, rumitard (sp) arthritis,, no medicines worked, he was in horrible pain,,, till finally he had a place pop out on his leg, like a huge pimple, the dermatologist diagnosed him correctly,,,i suggest getting another or more opinions, as in if it really is arthritis, the meds should help, my ex went to 3 drs before the final correct diagnosis

Degenerative arthritis is very painful and does cause swelling. Since the arthritis was seen on your x-rays then this most likely is a proper diagnosis. Be sure you are using anti-inflammatory medication to help the swelling and the pain. Try using an pain relief cream available at your local store. Soaking your hands in warm water can also help. You may also want to consider taking the supplement Glucosamine for a couple of months to see if this help. Sounds like you are having a bad flare up of your arthritis right now.

When my emotional pain got too bad and I couldn't get the help I needed, no matter what steps I took or who I asked for help (ER, family, friends), I eventually dissociated (started seeing myself from outside my body. I see this as my soul being so tired of the pain and what I was going to do that it had to leave. I went about my usual routine. I could still read communications in first person, but I was separated from myself. During that time I lost memory of what I was doing. There are points where my days are blackness. Then I have memories of pills in my hands--memories of hallucinations, seizures, charcol, etc. Extreme emotional pain can't be ignored. It hangs around. If you have a pastor, you may speak with him or her, but you may need a psychiatrist to get through this. If you can't afford an appointment with a private psychiatrist, go to a low income clinic. God put psychiatrists here for a reason. You don't need to suffer with this extreme pain if it can be relieved. If you had a broken leg, wouldn't you have a doctor set it and put it in a cast? Wouldn't you take the prescribed medications when the pain was too much? Emotional pain is no different. Ignoring a deep cut, hoping it will heal will likely lead to infection and loss of the arm if not death from gangrene. Ignoring emotional pain, hoping it will just go away, will likely lead to worse pain and death from a self-inflicted means. Don't take chances. Get help Bless you and good luck.

I suggest you have your cervical spine looked at. I have very similar symptoms but they are due to serious disc problems in my neck. I even have what I call the "dropsies". Things drop out of my hands for no apparent reason.

sometimes doctors have a very limited intelligence and need to be guided toward a correct diagnosis. it is a shame. but it is often true
