If it's any consolation, my wife, when she was 23, was also 5'5", and weighed 80 lb. There was no eating disorder. That's just the way she was. Weight gain came after her first pregnancy.
My daughter, 21 today, and taller than my wife, weighs 79 lb. A little thin ("slender build" is the euphemism), but perfectly normal in every way.
This girl (your daughter, I presume?) may not have an eating disorder. So long as she feels well and behaves normally, don't fret. However, if she's had a significant weight loss recently, then that should surely be a cause for concern, and must be properly investigated.
Hope your daughter's just fine, and your concerns are groundless.

Hmm... if it is any consolation, in my twenties I was 5'6 and 7st 10 and although I looked a little knobbly round the knees, I was a perfect size 10 (33-23-35), ate three full meals a day (I was into wholefoods and a healthy balanced diet), worked out three times a week and never felt healthier. After my first baby I remained around 9 st for some years and now I am a rather comfortable 10 st! I wouldn't worry about her unless she appears ill or her behaviour ir unusual - if she is anything like me, she will be irritated by repeated remarks about anorexia and this may affect her self esteem - which of course can trigger other problems!

well i had a friend who actually had an eating disorder. She was 29 and her parents had her commited. She used to weight 130 lbs and was about 5'3". Well she stared to drop weight badly. I would say in about 3 months she weighed 78 lbs. I knew she had a problem. But, we couldn't help her. She thought she was fat all the time. Which wasnt the case. On top of that she drank all the time. Well now she got the help that she needed only because her parents had her commited. She still thinks she is fat though and has a drinking problem yet today. If you think she has a eating disorder maybe you should say something to her and find out what is going on. Has she always weighed that much or was she heavier in the past. I would try to talk to her and let her know that you are there for her but, she needs to get help otherwise it could kill her. I would even talk with parents and see if they know what is going on with your friend and maybe they can help her.

its underweight but not dangerously, some people are just naturally thin and cannot gain weight easily. I am slightly shorter but weigh less, but I do not have an eating disorder, in fact I find I actually eat more than some of my friends who are heavier than me, I just can't gain weight. If she eats 3 square meals a day yet is just naturally thin, there is nothing to worry about! If I were you I'd stop worrying, if she was trying to lose weight or weighed about a stone less then perhaps you could have some cause for concern, but I'm sure shes probably perfectly healthy, being thin and underweight does not necessarily mean someone has an eating disorder!

Also consider her frame (small, medium, or large), which can be determined by the width of the elbow (measured between the two boney bits) when the arm is held at 90 degrees. Small boned people naturally weigh less, and if she's small frame her Body Mass Index (BMI) may fall within normal range . There's BMI tables you can look up. Also, muscle weighs more than fat, so if she doesn't have much muscle she will also weigh less.

She may or may not have an eating disorder. She might have been born small or she might even have a hrad time trying to gain weight. Dont ask her if she has an eating disorder, just make sure shes ok.

Yes she's definitely underweight if she's 5' 5".
Her BMI (body mass index) is 17.59.
Anything under 18.5 is considered unhealthy.
Feed that girl up!

yeah for 5ft 5ins you should be anywhere between 8st 3lbs - 10st ...thats the healthy normal range on the bmi index....
she could do with putting a few pounds on like,.... try talking to her ... but be careful how you approach the subject...
