Because those leaders with the strongest militia were left in charge even when they were colonized. They had authority, but now after they gained their independence that only meant nobody, not even the international community could challenge or question what they do in their own country.

Because most of the people have tribal loyalties, rather than loyalty to the national government. Eventually the military intervenes.

I think that Africa and India are the best arguments for Imperialism. While I think that people have the right to self determination, if you look at what has happened in most of the African nations, and India since England and the European powers left, you will see millions of people killed, mass starvation & c.

Look at what has happened in Zaire, which used to be known as Rhodesia. And even South Africa. You can argue with my politically incorrect views, but how would you argue with the people in those countries who have lost their lives?

Political lines in much of Africa (and elsewhere!) were drawn at the convenience of the colonial powers and did not correlate to tribal/cultural values. The political vacuum left by the withdrawal of the colonial powers had to be filled somehow, and without a shared base upon which to build it was inevitable that there would be a period of political instability. Mau's observation about all political power coming from the muzzle of a rifle makes itself plain in many subsaharan countries at present, but before you assign that to peculiarities of subsaharan Africa, you must consider that the same recently occurred (again) in the Balkans.

1.) Because the powers that be want it that way
2.) Divide and conquer, for resources (Africa has alot of essential natural rsources
3.) Democratic, and free market institutions only catered and were run by the elites who disenfranchised the minorities within the society
4.) If all of Africa were economically succesfull the only other countries that could compete would be Russia and China!

and so we conspired to keep the Africans down, because they would not let us control their resources.

AHHH Racism, it's still alive..

Because freedom is not something that can be given as a gift. It has to be earned, fought for, and wrested from those in power. If the people are too scared, poor, or lazy to fight for their freedom, they WILL lose it. That's an important lesson for ALL people, not just 'black' Africans.
