This March we went to the basics as you call it:
Example of our schedule:
March 23 = left San Diego to LA via Greyhound
March 24 = The Grove, is a shopping center with a trolley which you can ride around outside! We had dinner at Maggianos Little Italy, a romantic restaurant there! Have candle light dinner!
March 25 = Hollywood
March 26 = Knotts Berry Farm
= lunch at Asian Buffet just across the
place. This is one of the best
buffets I had tried in California.
March 27 = Disneyland
March 28 = California Adventure
= to San Diego via Greyhound
March 29 = San Diego Zoo
March 30 = Sea World
March 31 = back to LA with cousins in Irvine
April 1 = Simi Valley
April 2 = to El Centro ( cousins place)
April 8 = Universal Studios
It was so tiring! I rested for 2-3 days after these trips! Remember to go to these theme parks as soon as it opens so that you can get the best out of it. There is a 3 in one card or the 5 in one combination of these theme parks in which you will get it at a lower price. Better see their websites! I think the 3 is from San Diego, San Diego Zoo, Sea World and Wild Animal Park!
There are bottomless drinks at both San Diego Zoo and Sea World which you can refill throughout the day and serve as a souvenir too!
You can spend your time at California Adventure until 2-3 pm if you come opening time. Dont miss it , it is just besides the entrance to Disneyland. if you have more time, Legoland is located in Carlsbad in San Diego. Dont forget to see the strawberry fields if these are still in season in Carlsbad! You can probably go strawberry picking!
Dont plan your trip during the spring break! It was heavy traffic in downtown LA! Disneyland was too crowded too!
Try riding the trolley in San Diego. It is so widespread that I appreciated the whole of San Diego only after riding those trolley. There are bus stations at the trolley stations. Be careful in parking your car. My friend just park his car at Ralphs in San Diego, when he returned, the windows were broken!
Dont every miss the Coronado bridge! It has spectacular view of the place. Did you know that this bridge won awards due to its structure? This is one of the tallest bridge in the world. Try visiting Hotel del Coronado which is the one of the best not only in the USA but also in the world.
Try searching for surfing in this area also. The beach houses along Malibu in LA has magnificent view also.
Drive to the last American exit! There is an outlet store at San Isidro. Be careful if you are planning a trip in Tijuana!
I stayed in California for almost 6 months from November last year to May this year! I started in San Francisco x 1month, Concord x 1 month, National City in San Diego x 1 month, San Diego x 1 month, LA, Alisso Viejo, El Centro and lastly in Camarillo. I was just lucky to have family friends and cousins who adopted me. It was only when we stayed in Anaheim and in Glendale that I stayed in a hotel.

Realize that Disney and Universal are at least one full day and that San Diego is 2-4 hours away, depening on traffic and where you are staying. Personally, I'd skip the zoo and do the wild animal park instead.
As far as other things to do, there are about a million of them.
Visit the Chinese theatre
Look at the 'stars'
Eat at Spago
Walk third street promenade
Visit Griffith Park Observatory
Visit the Santa Monica Pier
Walk Rodeo Drive
Shop on Melrose
Drive PCH from malibu to SJC
Gaze at the Bev Hills houses
Have a drink at all the swanky hotels and bars
Go whale watching
Drive Mulholland drive
You get the idea. . .

i just went in august. Its great. for surfing i recommend going over the border about 30 minutes south of tijuana. Cheap lobster.
we also went to lake havasu. Tons of fun. Hit up Vegas its only 3 1/2 hours away. Go to San Diego on the way to tijuana if you havent been there yet.
