"Best" without specifying best for what leaves us very little in the way of recommending anything for you.

I shoot a Canon 30D which to my mind is the best digital pro-sumer camera I could buy for my money. It takes both the EF and EF-S lenses. I happen to own one very beautiful EF-S lens, the 10-22mm USM. Extremely wide angle. I paid almost $1000 for that lens new. The Canon 30D runs about $1500 for the back alone.

I could have gone to the Canon 5D ($3000) but I would have lost the 10-22mm lens. But it is a great camera, no doubt.

Canon or Nikon, I do not think you will have much problems either way. I would urge you to buy locally so that you can have the tech support right there. Plus, you are helping get the folks jobs locally where you need them.

You have two choice - Nikon and Canon. The Nikon - D2Xs is about $4500, body only. Pro lens will run about $1200 to$1500 extra for each. The Canon equal runs at least $2,000 more, also just for the body.

Or, go all the way and buy a digital back to a Hasselblad. The back will set you back about $35,000 and the camera with lens another $5,000. But you get amazing picture quality if you are shooting mostly in a studio setting. Hard to carry that puppy in a camera bag in the field.

The Canon 5D is an extremely nice camera. It retails for around $3300 (body only) but you can most likely get it cheaper online.
