Is it just an old wives tale?

If melanin (color hormone) production stops in hair follicles, hair loses its color. This can be caused by a deficiency of B-complex vitamins. If it's hereditary, it can't be reversed. If it's non-hereditary, it can; a moderate increase the amount of B vitamin intake will bring the color back.
When it's in your genetic make up, however, the signal originated from your hard wiring. Sorry.
Stress and smoking and many other factors (taking certain antidepressants as well) will speed up the metabolism of B vitamins and may halt the production of melanin. You can reverse this kind of grey hair by either eliminating stress and other bad things, or by increasing your intake of B vitamins to compensate.
You should do what you can to preserve the non DNA grey hair.

I take antidepressants and my hair is the same color its been my whole life except for when I dye it.
Stress doent always make your hair grey but it will make your hair grow slower and or fall out. I know all of this from my personal life.

Both depression and gray hair may be related to hypothyroidism, which can be detected via a simple and relatively inexpensive blood test and treated with replacement thyroid hormone, again relatively inexpensive.

Unfortunately, although taking the thyroid hormone will probably relieve your depression symptoms, it won't cure your gray hair. While hypothyroidism can cause symptoms of depression, it doesn't cause gray hair. Instead, certain types of hypothyroidism and gray hair may have the same underlying cause. It's not clear what that is, so there isn't any cure yet.

In addition to relieving symptoms of depression, taking thyroid hormone may stop hair loss and reverse dry skin, also symptoms of hypothyroidism.

It's not common but is very normal. You can thank your ancestors for your grey hair and receding hairline. And btw, please don't do that comb-over thing. It doesn't fool anyone. If you don't like the way you look balding, shave your head. Lots of men do that and it can be very sexy.
