Baptism has nothing to do with being saved. We do it in obedience to what Jesus asked. Baptism is just a outward showing that you excepted Jesus as your Saviour. Thats in Romans 6.

Baptism IS necessary for salvation. We must also have faith and do the will of God.
Jesus said (Mark 16:16a):
"Whoever believes AND is baptized will be saved;"
Jesus said (John3:5):
"Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.
The Holy Spirit, speaking through Peter (Kepha) said:
In it He (Jesus) also went to preach to the spirits in prison, who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water. This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. (1 Peter 3:19-21a)
Jesus commanded (Matthew 28:19):
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit,

Yes. When Jesus was asked what one must do to be saved, He replied "you must be born again". The person He was speaking to didn't understand what He meant by that term, and asked "can I re-enter my mother's womb and be born again"? Jesus then told him that being born again has nothing to do with natural birth, but consists of being reborn through the waters of baptism, and receiving the Holy Spirit through that sacrament.

Ask yourself this question: Why would Jesus Christ call John the Baptist the greatest of the prophets, get baptized himself, personally tell Nicodemus that it was necessary, and command his apostles to go out and baptize the whole world, if he wasn't absolutely serious about it?

You must be baptized in the purging fire of the Holy Spirit. Water baptism does not save---it is for the purpose of making a a public commitment to Christ. God is concerned about what is in your heart, not about how much water is on your back.
