What can you do/ say to them

Do you have to let them in?

What do they have to show you? (any legal warrant etc?)

The more information the better, would be very much appreciated. My girlfriend's getting some hassle and I want to know the facts.

Never let them in, if you do you are stumped. Never leave a door unlocked or any windows open because they can gain entry.

Santa Claus has an excellent link

Having looked through it I feel certain points should be highlighted.

You do not have to let them in, but once you do allow them in peaceably you cannot forcibly remove them.

Once you have let them in peaceably they are allowed to return any time of day or night and enter (forcibly "breaking in" if necessary) to seize goods.

They may try and trick you into allowing them peaceable entry. Watch out for these.
