Washington the District of Columbia is not a state but the land area set aside, where the federal government has its main offices, including The Prez, congress, pentagon, etc. its just north of Virginia west of Maryland.
There is a state Washington but it is on the west coast, north of Oregon and south of British Columbia.

Washington is a city located in and coextensive with the District of Columbia. The District of Columbia is a Federal enclave, originally 10 miles square, located on land that was in the states of Maryland and Virginia. The Virginia portion was retroceded back to Virginia in 1847, so the District of Columbia is only the land originally in Maryland. As it is not a state, it has no Senators, and only a non-voting Representative in the House. Many of the Federal offices are headquartered in the District of Columbia, but no the Defense Department, which is in the Pentagon in the portion of Virginia that was at one time part of the District.
The State of Washington is located in the far northwestern corner of the United States, about as far as possible from the "other Washington" in the continental United States.

It is NOT considered to be a state. It has nonvoting representation in the United States House of Representatives, but it does not have 2 U.S. Senators, as all 50 states have.

It's not a state. It's a district. Hence, "the District of Columbia."

It's "bordered," so to speak, by Maryland and Virginia.
