we have this white pit bull and he is about 90% white and has big patches of circles on him and in those circles are brindle. and he mated with a female rotti 2 times and each time there was not one puppy that came out white. all the puppies were either tan, brindle or red. i thought that it was so wierd the only white that they got on them was on the chest and on the paws and a little line between there eyes. has any of ur dogs had puppies that didnt look like any of there parents or had any of the colors? i just thought that it was wierd.

It most likely has to do with ressessive and dominant genes. I don't remember 100% how it works, but we learned about it in science and it sounds like this completely.
for example, if your parents both had brown eyes, and you had brown eyes, and your husbands mom had brown eyes and his dad had blue, and he had blue, it would be more likely that your kids would have brown eyes. Plus, I think brown eyes are more of a dominant trait then blue or something.
its sort of like selective breeding and evolution, all that stuff. Your white pitbull's genes are recessive, while your black rotti's genes are dominant. And, at least one of your pit bulls parents probably had brown in them, so the chances are higher for the pups to be brown.
hope this helps! good luck with the pups!

Just so you know you're mixing two breeds are particularly known for agression issues (particullarly the pbt) - people often abandon them and shelters are at a loss to home them because the average pet owner doesn't know how to train these dogs properly. Dogs being put down in shelters - it's all about heartbreak.
However, to answer the genetics side, darker colours are dominant genes and lighter colours are recessive genes. Red is a recessive gene that requires two parents to possess as recessives in order for a dominant mix to occur.

White is a recessive color. He will have colored pups unless mated with a white dog.
But why would you breed those two? There are so many pit mixes in shelters and being euthanized every day!
America has a stigma against both pits and rotts, so your pups could very likely wind up in a shelter.
Save some lifes and spay/neuter your pets!

white is completely recessive gene wise, so unless he mated with a white dog, the odds are against any of the puppies being white. Please have both these animals altered so that you stop adding to the unwanted pet population. I am sure that you were able to find homes for the puppies, but there is a good chance, since both these breeds tend to be agressive, and both require strong owners that know the breeds and know how to train them to be good pets.

Normally when a dog comes out mostly white in this kind of breed, that means thre is a defect. That is why he is not passing it to the other pups. You may want to watch the pups grow up though, because with the dad having a defect, he could pass another different defect to the pups.

One you shouldn't be breeding these two dogs to begin with and 2nd to answer your question it is due to the white gene being recessive.

Why are you breeding your pit with a rott? There are too many dogs without homes out there already, you don't need to bring more into the world.

Well, since you are creating MUTTS who knows. See us real BREEDERS use one breed and breed it to the same. That is what good breeders do. Not breed one breed to another. I have Newfs and breed them to other Newfs, so I KNOW what I am getting. The puppies will look like their parents, or look like the parents recessive gene. That is what makes mutts. You don't know what you are going to get.
