Well, unlike everyone else, I will answer you in a nice knowledgable way!

At about 4-5 weeks the female will become sluggish, and she will begin to eat more. (I have a pregnant St. Bernard right now.) The vet told us that at about 4 weeks, we could get an ultra sound, but anytime before that, they couldn't even tell if she was pregnant, so not to even bother coming in. She will carry pups for around 63 days, and about 1-2 weeks before she delivers she'll start producing milk and her tets will enlarge rapidly. If you need to know anything else, please e-mail me. My dog is in her 6th week, and she is 54 days into her pregnancy. People will tell you not to create more problems, and to get the animal fixed, but just ignore them, because it isn't anyone elses business, you simply asked a question about your dog. :o)

Good Luck!

Go the vets immediately. Ask about a tablet (mismate pill) that will reduce the litter - you may be in time.

Her behavour will change, thats how you will first pick it up before the other signs will start.

Please ignore the posters that say not to worry about future problems - I would get her spayed.

There is a good link at the bottom which explains the heat and reproductive cycle and the differences between pregnant and non pregnent cycles.

Unfortunately there is no hit or miss with dogs, its not like with humans, if in heat, any mating is always 100% sucessful with a full litter which you will have to try to give away. The 'heats' cause the female dog to go haywire as she is panting in physical pain and torment until mated.

Forget about saving money trying to manage the heats - it really is best to get her spayed - it cuts out a whole lot of health problems and torment for the dog not just you!

If you see male dogs in the neighborhood smoking cigarettes, that might be a sign.
