Before he was assigned as a prophet, Muhammad belong to a religious group called the hanif.
Hanif is actually a pre-Islamic non-jewish or Christian arab monotheistic group that exist in Arabia.
The term is from the Arabic root h-n-f meaning to "to incline, to decline" (so Lane 1893). The Hanīfiyyah is the law of Abraham; the verb tahannafa means "to turn away from idolatry", "to become circumcised". In the verse 3:27 of the Quran it has also been translated as "upright person" and outside the Quran as "to incline towards a right state or tendency".
This Hanif sect actually forbids its followerd to eat food sacrfised to idols nor to worship idols. These sect also use to the habit of fasting and retreating to caves for meditation for 40 days normally....
Can you christians stop calling Allah the moon god !!! Gosh, I am very annoyed ! the Sumerian moon god's name is NANNA, not Allah or Elohim...By the way, the moon god is not the greatest god in the arab panthenon. It is only one out of the 360 idols. The main idol that is worshipped is the male bearded Idol, hubal, regarded by the pagan arabs as the greatest, and this evetually end when muhammad officially destroyed Hubal when he succesfully Conquered Mecca.
By the way, robert Murray is a liar !!

I don't think he had a religion, people were worshipping idols that they made then. And he did not create Islam. It already existed. It was the same religion as Judaism and Christianity in those days, before people corrupted those, which is why Islam was revealed once again.

He was born a muslim. (as Islam has been prevalent from the start of time itself - most non-muslims dont realise this. Islam was not 'created' or 'founded' by the Prophet Mohammed.)
He was not jewish.
Allah was his one and only God.
He recieved the revelation from Allah later on in life. This was when he was told by Allah that he is a prophet of people. The methods of living life as a muslim, such as the methods of prayer, came to him then.

Before the invention of Islam, people in the region were polytheistic.
Mohammed's legacy is that he rallied everyone (usually at the edge of the sword) around one common religion.
He said the revelation under which he wrote the Koran was given to him by an angel (Gabriel, I think) but Gabriel must've been having a bad day because there were MANY revisions after the initial "revelation". This usually happened when Mohammed needed to do something that was originally forbidden. Good ol' Gabriel would come along and *poof* suddenly it was ok to do.

Islam was not created. belief in one creator always existed.but disbelief will also exist until the end of time.God choose the name islam. He is one creator. Mohamed's belief in one God was like all the
prophets before him. They all worshiped and believed in one creator.

Mohhamad was of the tribe called the Banu Quraish.
That tribe was considered a 'desert tribe of Israel'.
Specifically, in order to call yourself an "Arab" that meant that you acknowledged you were a descendant of Ismael, son of Abraham.
So,
Mohhamad was a Jew......
He did not 'create Islam' he re-wrote the texts to clarify the 'inconsistencies in the Christian faith'. Christianity had already begun to write things wrong in his eyes, and the Jews were scattered to the winds by the Roman Empire and unable to correct this problem.
Muhhamad stepped up to the plate and did it for them.
Muslims and Jews both agree Jesus was only a Prophet from the ancestral lineage of David. Christians, not knowing the difference, made him into a 'son of God'.

He did not create Islam. He had no religion, his people were worshiping idols, but he never did so. Unlike them, he still remembered Abraham who informed his people (centuries ago) of the one and only God.
