As a birthday surprise, I'm treating my mum to two nights in HK's Peninsula hotel (6th-8th July). Ideally I want to book a Grand Deluxe Harbour View Room but none of the discount sites have this option listed for these dates. I can, however, go direct via the hotel's site. Should I wait to see if the discount appears on the other sites and risk missing out on availability, or should I book it now through the Pen's site and risk getting a better deal elsewhere?

Big thanks!!

I would book the Peninsula directly via their own website first. Alternatively, if I am in the US or where there is a local Peninsula - I would call them - their reservation systems are all linked and they can call up all sorts of data and tell you about availability and any special local knowledge you might want to know such as limo, Rolls Royce in this case, transfers etc.

Alternatively, I would try one of the luxury travel agents where you are located. The chances are they may have some inventory that they usually package into some sort of flight/hotel deal.

While the Pen is fantastic and iconic - you should also consider the InterContinental across the road - it has a fabulous spa as well. You might want her to consider that other icon across the harbour - the Mandarin Oriental or even the new Four Seasons!

The first week of July is known as Golden Week - it's one of the weeks that mainlanders travel in large numbers out of China on their holidays and the Japanese I believe fly out of Japan. Expect it to be busy.

Good luck.

If you really want that room then book it now. The discount sites often only get rooms like that if they are still available last minute and they want to try to fill them. Although like you say, you may pay more now and find a deal later on, you'd probably feel better knowing it was booked. The only thing you could try is to keep checking with the hotel on their availability and keep checking the discount sites and if the hotel is getting booked up and the discount sites still don't have the room, then book with the hotel. You could also try emailing the hotel and asking them for the best rate they can do as sometimes hotels do give discounts, you just have to be cheeky enough to ask!!

July is summer vacation and considered high season so don't get too hung up on the discounts if you wanted to get the deluxe rooms with harbor views.
I would say to continue checking up til 2007 Jan ending. Beyond that the availability would seriously be in jeoprady. If that happens, consider others like the Regent, Mandarin Oriental or Grand Hyatt, all are 5 stars and offer unbeatable harbor view.

Land is a top classification in Hong Kong so this could translate into room. in case you have one thousand squaremeters for footing and then improve you will get a hundred, 10 squaremeter rooms consistent with floor or 50, 20 squaremeter rooms. that's no longer right, in basic terms a foul occasion. So i could wager that's the economics of the construction.

I suggest you call the hotel directly and request the discount you're seeing. They do have people who speak excellent English. The call will not cost you that much and you'll have your answer.

It's probable that the hotel never lists the room you want on the discount sites.

Ask the hotel how many of these rooms are available and then make a decision about when to book. Good luck

You could try going to a travel agent as they use operators seperate to the internet and they would probably be able to get you the room type you want and with a deal as well. Us travel agents are still handy for some things you know!!! if you want prices email info@blue-skies-travel.co.uk
