probably because that would lead to public humilliation, being arrested and doing time in jail. just a thought.

Its mostly for Social Acceptance. I drink, I smoke , use to lie about it, now I see no purpose in the lie. I do not abuse stuff because I have learned how to control myself. I can smoke a rock of coke and never think about it for a year, I can drink a shot of liquor and walk away from the bar and never have another drink in my life. These are the choices that we make, some feel they will not be accepted by others if they wear a dog collar while surfing. Thats humanity. It isnt a race that any can win, so have fun, dont hurt anybody else, and enjoy the ride.

You have to become very sick to continue an addiction. Lying is part of the illness.
Unfortunately, we live in a very intolerant society when it comes to this particular illness.
While the illicit use of drugs may be foreign to you, it is as natural as breathing to the addict.
An example-
Hold your breath, for as long as you can...keep holding it, put your hand up in the air when you need to breathe again...keep holding your breath....at what point did you HAVE to breath. It's like breathing for the addict. They HAVE to use the same as YOU have to breathe.
Addicts need to be treated, medically. Perhaps when we are more focused on the treatment than the punishment, the addict won't have to get so sick as to lie, cheat and steal to support their addiction.
Many people medicate. We live in a world that condones the use of certain drugs and condemns the use of others. A very confusing message. And there are people that I would absolutely advise against taking them off their "meds". It is not as simple as STOPPING.
Peace.

Apparently you haven't met me yet. What's your question?
Supagurl is right though. When the first thing I tell you is that I'm a hardcore alcoholic one of two things just went thru your mind. A) I'm looking for attention so I'll say anything stupid or B) I'm a drunk which means I can't be trusted. And yes on rare occasion you'll get c) Addiction makes you to stupid to be rational, as someone up there suggested. All of which is humiliating which is the point of giving yourself to addiction in the first place... to try to avoid humiliation.(ah yes, j b. hate to miss out on giving him his due credit for calling me a whack job)

Substance abusers suffer from irrationality. Once their clean, they're a lot more rational.

Hmmmm.... this is just a guess. I would have to say to avoid getting into trouble with the law, losing their job, and/or losing respect of their peers (to name a few).

It's a matter of control. They don't want to let out that they are not in control and that in fact the drug is controlling them.
