I have seen some of these. As the saying goes, like father, like son.
Insurance companies look at genetics for this (heart disease, alcoholism). There is an excellent book, Breaking the Generational Curse ( or close to that) by Maralyn Hicky (sp?).
I had a pastor and family over one time. We were talking about my family. In conversation, it came up that my parents had died of cancer. So the Pastors wife said this is a generational curse. She prayed that it would be broken and we thanked the Lord that it was. I have not had it and have outlived my mother. Generation curses can go 3 to 4 generations. I read that last night in Numbers. Some curses can go 10 generations (usually sexual sin). A curse can skip a generation, too. I escaped the curse of using tobacco, but my son didn't. There is a lot more, but breaking it with prayer and standing firm on it is what is needed. Sometimes we need to forgive previous generations for their sin. And thank God that the curse is broken!

Generation curses were part of the law of Moses (Ex 20:5). Jesus has redeemed us from the curse of the law (Gal 3:13). After knowing Jesus as your Lord and Savior do not go back to the law and subject yourself to the curse of the law again (Gal 3:10). Live in victory in the abundance of grace and gift of righteousness (Rom 5:17). Walk in the Spirit and the righteous requirements will be fulfilled (Rom 8:4). Do not go to discover what Jesus has already set you free from.

Read the Book of Jeremiah and you will see that there is no such thing as what you have asked. It states that God will visit His wrath on the generations of the people who DO NOT LOVE HIM. What my father did has no bearing on me IF I love the Lord and try to follow Him the best I can.

Any one can stop it at anytime, just turn to the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the One who came to take away the sins of the world.
