Most severe sore throats are caused by viral infections, which can only be dealt with by your own immune system. Other medications and treatments can only offer symptomatic relief at best, and can at worst make things worse. If you have a sore throat due to strep, for instance, you can expect to have it for at least 10-14 days. There are numerous medications which can help numb things so you can eat, and gargles to sooth the throat, but otherwise the healing all comes from within you. You can help assist things by taking life a little easier, drinking plenty of fluids to keep the throat moist, aspirin or Tylenol for pain relief, and avoiding talking more than needed. Eat softer, but nutricious meals, soups and puddings are always good to a tender throat. Either cold or warm drinks are appropriate, you decide which feels best for yourself. Milk will tend to make the mucous secretions feel thicker, and perhaps want to cough or spit, which will not help any, so they should be limited. Otherwise, tea with a bit of honey is a favorite sore throat soothe. Hard candy is as good as cough drops, and cheaper to boot. A humidifier or vaporizor that adds moisture to your room is a good help as well, and makes breathing easier.
To be honest with you, I can't recommend homeopathic remedies. The theory behind them is to use an herb or such that causes similar symptoms, to counter your problem. In your case that would mean taking something that normally is irritating to the throat. Personally it doesn't make much sense to me, and rather seems illogical.
If you have already had your sore throat for a week or so, you nearly at the end of your suffering. Antibiotics won't help because they only kill bacteria, not viruses. With or without an antibiotic, you will still suffer from a virus for 7-10 days at the best. Supporting your body while it does what it does best is your most sensible solution, and you can do that best using the old fashioned, but valid, suggestions. Rest, drink, eat soft and nutritious foods, and use things to soothe the throat as best you can. The more you do those things, the sooner you can be on the mend. The more you try to push things and speed them along, the slower it actually goes and longer it will take. Sorry, there are no magic cures for the most common miserys of colds, sore throats, and coughs. Nature gave you the best defense, your immune system. It just doesn't always work as fast as we would like.
