All I know about Harlem is Arnold and Willis were from there, and I should stay away. But how bad is it really? I've heard it's much better than it used to be, but is it a safe place to live? I'm looking at an apartment one block north of central park. Thoughts on spanish harlem also welcome.

TIA!

Harlem is getting gentrified. However, it still has some problems. If you are getting a place around 111th st, you should be ok. Spanish Harlem, from 5th to the first and from 96th to about 114th st has the most projects anywhere in a small confined space. I would definately becareful in the area, both harlem and spanish harlem. If you are black or hispanic, you will blend in better. If you are white and alone, epecially at night, you could be easy pickins. Avoid the projects and keep your wits about you in the day and especially at night and you will be fine. Also, tru baller is right. Watch what you say, and don't stare at anyone and you won't be a statistic.

Actually, Harlem is becoming more gentrified. Lots of businesses and investments are coming into Harlem. A lot of people are investing money and building properties there. It is getting to be a much nicer and safer place to live, but it depends on the particular area you live in. Anywhere bordering Columbia University is nice.

Spanish Harlem is not so nice. I would not recommend it if you can't blend in with the locals.

Harlem is an area; Brooklyn is a borough containing dozens of neighborhoods of all types. Brooklyn covers 71 sq. miles and has a inhabitants of over 2.5 million human beings. Harlem's inhabitants is below one hundred thirty,000. jointly as there are 5 NYPD precincts that conceal areas of Harlem, there are 23 in Brooklyn. a number of those Brooklyn precincts have crime costs between the backside in NYC. jointly as crime in Harlem has easily declined markedly over the final decade or so, there are none that would desire to be located in that type. the element is, you're probably questioning of in easy terms a small component of Brooklyn whilst making your assessment.

I live with my wife one half block from Central Park in harlem and we happen to love the neighborhood. There are great restaurants, shopping, playgrounds, etc. and the neighborhood is clean and friendly. But your best bet is to visit the neighborhood and decide for yourself.
Also my wife and I are real estate agents for the #1 agency in the city. If you want some more information about properties in the area feel free to contact me directly.

Good luck!

you know, im from harlem, born and raised and i think it is disgusting that almost everytime someone mentioned harlem is getting better, they follow it up w/ the great influx of white people. harlem is wonderful. in my opinion it is the best place to live and i am not saying that just b'cuz i am from there. harlem has great everything, it just has a bad rap. if people were afraid to live there b4 gentrification, they should stay away now. the only thing that makes a place bad are ignorant people.

Harlem is becoming a better place, before it wasn't that good, but it's improving. A lot of Caucasians are moving there.

any place or area is dangerous at the wrong time and place! If you go there and you feel safe...go for it. If you have any doubts- look elsewhere!
