Interesting question. I think it is odd that christians allow the notion of hell to exist. For if there is a hell, then God is entirely fallible.

Guess what the greatest human fear is... Being burnt alive and guess what the second biggest is... public speaking. Standing before God and giving an account for your life then receiving that judgement is something we all inherently know will happen. people use different methods to block it out but our conscience was designed to guide us away from the fire..we can re-program it and turn down the guilt if we like but it is like taking pain killers and not addressing the problem. The other side of this equation is that if they are the rules then God needs to inform each person of the rules and offer an opportunity to get right with Him or else He is not really worth serving as his morals would be questionable. The Bible does say that each man shall be judged according to the light they have been shown meaning the more you know the more accountable you are. This is really too deep a question to fully explore here but it is a great topic to research. Good luck finding your path to peace.

We do not make up our own theology in Christianity based on what we think is right or wrong. Christians (humanly speaking) don't like the idea any more than you do, but we believe it because that is what the Bible clearly teaches. The Bible also teaches that man can't out vote God, and even if every man on earth throughout history voted against what God is doing, every man would be wrong, and God would be right.
Romans 9:20 "On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, "Why did you make me like this," will it? 21 Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use? 22 What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction?

Easy question. God is perfect. He is perfectly loving, perfectly just, perfectly fair. Since He is perfect, He cannot "lower" His standards. Since man didn't measure up God became man in the form of Jesus.
Let me answer a question with a question....why would someone who spent their entire life rejecting God WANT to go to heaven??? Afterall, they couldn't spare time for Him on Earth...even a short amount of time (ie: church attendance)...why would they want to spend eternity with Him? Seems to me that God is being perfect in His decision to give them what they want.....eternity without Him. They shall spend eternity as they spend their life.
I do believe this: Because God is perfect...no one will be banished from heaven without just cause.

Because the Holy Word of God says it is so. It also says in the Old Testament that it is a strange work of God. He does not want anyone to perish, but we all have freewill to accept him or reject Him.
Read Isaiah 28:21 for proof. It would also help you to read the whole chapter to see the complete meaning. Please read. You cannot take one verse and make any sense out of it. You have to go back and pick up the subject.

Because Christianity is a religion about "salvation" and a "savior", they couldn't sell their religion without saving you from something. Where Taoism, Buddhism and Hinduism promote inner tranquility and spiritual development, where Native animist religions promote harmony with Nature and exploration of Inner Space, where Judaism promotes a relationship with god based upon some sort of ethical agreement, Christianity and Islam base their existence upon saving you. If there's no hell, they both fall apart.
Hellaciously yours,
Laz

God does not "punish" you for your sins. He gives you the choice. You can accept the sacrifice of the Savior, or you can suffer the consequences for rejecting Him. It's your choice and no one can make it but you.
Let's say you had a credit card with $10,000 on it and you could not pay it. The company said they will sue you and come after you because you cannot pay. Then someone came along and said they'd pay it for you, would you reject that? That's what Jesus did on the cross he paid your debt that he did not owe, for you a sinner that could not pay. God loves you so much that he's not willing for you to perish so he sent someone to pay your debt to get you out of your sin. If you reject that offer, it's your fault, not His.
