Is he going to actually race? In that case there are certain rules and regulations that you must follow:
1. You cannot use a name that has been previously used in the past, unless the original horse has been dead for at least 10 years. The names of horses that have won major races (such as the Grand National, the Derby, the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas etc) can never be used again. So there will never be another Red Rum or Shergar.
2. You cannot use a name that can be deemed offensive, in any language! Such well-known names that have been turned down in the UK are Wearthefoxhat (say it very fast in an Irish accent and you'll see why!), Joe Blob and Mary Hinge (spoonerisms are not permitted!).
3. You cannot use a name that may cause confusion during a race - ie Photo Finish or Stewards Enquiry.
4.You are limited to the number of characters in a name - I think it is 20.
Other than that, you are free to choose whatever you like!
Personally I think the best names are those that use a combination of the sire and dam's names, or those that are a clever play on words.
For example, the mighty SINGSPIEL was by In The Wings out of Glorious Song - a singspiel is a type of opera.
Other examples are GEE SPOT (by Pursuit of Love out of My Discovery), CLOG DANCE (Woodman out of Royal Fandango).
Many Northern Dancer line horses carry dance or theatre related names: NUREYEV, NIJINSKY and SADLER'S WELLS.
Have fun, but please try to be original!

Is he a thoroughbred?
This is very important. If you call him something like "Old Brownie" or "Rusty", he will never run a lick.
Here are a few off the top of my head: Disraeli Gears, Ball Lightning, Search and Destroy, Ladder to Heaven, Raging Inferno, You and What Army, Pint of Stout, Blood Meridian, Twelve Clip, Ghetto Ninja, Lawrence of Arabia.
Give the horse a name he can be proud of, something with class, style and elan. And he will run for you. Give him an embarassing name, and he will refuse to lift a hoof.

Hard to name a horse you never seen or know the owners name, your name (bobs rocket) instead of bob your name again your name combined with treasure (Tina's treasure) your name in place of Tina's. moonlight, britestar, stumperjumper if he likes to jump over things, tavarish means friend in Russian,Try to find a name that has a special meaning to you. That's why his name should start with yours and add something you could call him by his second name but introduce him as your name plus: (Karen's brown beauty) Get the idea tell a friend the whole name the horse is special to you but when you talk to him you would leave your name off some of the time.hope this was of some help I know naming a pet or friend animal is special and hard at times I have about 30 pets running around my house and yard and they all have special names given to match them.cats and dogs mostly.we used to have raccoons, skunks and possums.naming was quite a project.

If you are registering the horse with the Jockey Club the name must be approved by them so pick out a couple and fil in the forms and send it in.
They will let you know if someone else is using the name or not. And will pick one of your choices and notify you.
If it is just for yourself or to show with pick something you like.

Well, if HE is a Racehorse, then he already HAS a name. What do his bloodstock papers say? If he is un-named, then use his parents names & lineage to make-up a name that links him with his heritage & bloodlines. He is, after all, a part of the royal equine bloodline!
