The Bible is the inspired word of God. Now some of the stories in the Bible are symbolic yet are inspired by God to bring the reader closer to God. Other stories are indeed real.
As for writers of the Bible. It was not written by one author. In the Old testament many of the books were written by the prophets or scribes of the prophets. Other books in the Old testament were written by Jewish priests and scribes. Some of the psalms are attributed to King David. However it is unlikely he wrote all of them.
As for the New testament the books Mark, Matthew, Luke and John were books named after the authors themselves. In the Case of the book of John it i said that the Apostle Johns people recorded the teachings and words of him and wrote it down. Mark is said to be the earliest written Gospel - Mark is said to have included himself in the account as one who ran away when Jesus was arrested.
Th acts of the apostles was written by a colleague of Paul the apostle. The letters of Paul were written by this great man. However some commentators say that maybe his last letter he wrote may not have been his - that is debatable..
So basically the books in the bible were written by many authors. Some where prophets, saints, Holy people, priests - religious people, intellectuals, doctors etc. All of these people were inspired by God to write these accounts.
The Catholic Church was the Church guided by the Holy Spirit that chose the books that were included in the Bible. Some books were not include because of falsity and delusion etc...
Every time you read the bible it has an effect on you as it is the inspired word ofGod regardless if what you read is symbolic or very real. Jesus for instance is very real! He is a living God.

Many different people, it is an anthology, and even what people now call a single book like Genesis, or the gospel of any of the 'saints' are clearly a mishmash of different sources. I notice some answers give the stock '40 authors', but this is just quaint and naive christian 'scholarship' ; Just look at the amount of repetition, how many times the same fable is re-told with minor variation, even with n the text, and the sheer number of inconsistencies and contradictions, this is a big clue that it has been stuck together many times over!

There are a lot of different authors to the books of the old and new testament. Some are based on older myths and legends (ie, noahs flood, and the 2 different accounts of the creation myth found in the first couple of chapters of genesis), so it's really difficult to narrow down to an exact number.
even some of the 'given' authors are not correct (ie it's unlikely that the 'song of solomon' was written by solomon).
you cannot know that the bible is true, unless you have faith, or have been brainwashed by one of the many, many religions which believe in the bible
most rational people belive that the bible is a mix of history, poetry, fairy tale, prejudice and mysogyny (and porn - song of solomon)
depending on how interested you are, you might like to take a look for this book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060630353/sr=8-1/qid=1148005454/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-7028413-0797700?%5Fencoding=UTF8
it's should answer your question.... the writer is a non-religious biblical historian

The Bible was written by the people as we know. And they are so many versions of the Bible written by different people but which of them is right and truly from God? every christian would say that the bible he follows is absolutely right and would prefer it above the others. but how can you be sure which of them has fictional stories and which do not. we don't have any original reference from which we can actually check. So only God knows .

""2 Timothy 3:16 states that “All scripture is inspired by God….” In 2 Peter 1:20-21, Peter reminds the reader to “know this first of all, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, … but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” The Bible itself tells us that it is God who is the author of His book. ""
This is quoted from http://www.allabouttruth.org/Who-Wrote-The-Bible.htm
The bible is actually physically written by many people. If you can get a King James Version of the study bible, each book of the bible will include who is believed to have written it. It will explain why it was written and break down the difficult passages for you.

For the first 4-500 years it wasn't written but past down by word of mouth. Then it was written on goat skins time and time again as they kept fading. first written in Aramaic then translated into Hebrew then into Greek , then to Russian then into German.400 years ago the English got their hands on it and printed the version you have now. That's a brief short version.
Now I cant even take a shopping list to the super market without it getting altered so why on earth we should believe a story handed down by word of mouth over hundreds of years and then translated for the convenience of the church I have no idea.
But it was written by many scribes some of which have been deliberately edited. by the Romans and Greeks.
So? Wasn't it Mel Gibson?

The Bible is teachings from many Christians, through eons of years we've had writers and some have been instructed by God to write down his teachings, ex: Moses and his 10 commandments etc.... Teachings at a point in time that had to come about because of God being displeased with the actions of his people. You say stories or fictional, they are certainly not fictional, I like to say they are teachings throughout the past that have been preserved in a book to help us understand. A book not only written by one person by many many people.

Supposedly Moses wrote the first five books, eahc prophet wrote his or her own book and the gospel was written by the apostles named in them. Acts were Peter, Romans, Corinthians etc were Paul, John wrote Revelations as well as the books named for him. So there you have it. The Bible was written by men, with all their fallibilities and biases.
