I adopted this little guy (4 months old) from a rescue and I am trying to determine how much food he really needs a day. He weighs about 25 pounds and I have been giving him about two cups of hamburger/rice mixed with dry puppy food twice a day. He enhales every bit of it immediately. Should I be giving him more?

The rescue shelter that I adopted him from suggested the hamburger/rice mix for the first week to 10 days to give him a chance to adapt to the environment changes and the different brand food.

At his age, you should be giving that to him twice a day......They are very energetic dogs, and have very high metabolisms........so need lots of upkeep to keep them happy, if in doubt read the packaging on your dogs dry food bag......

Too much food for the size of dog. IF you're feeding 4+cups a day to a small dog you are giving him too much.
Stop the hamburger/rice mixture.
You should feed a good kibble ...1 cup puppy food 2x day...and he will get all he needs.
A 16 week old pup will adjust to his new home just fine. Stop babying him or you will end up with problems getting him to eat real dog food.

Actually, just try going up and looking in the shelters. Many shelters have an outdoor kennel area for dogs that are noisy... typically you will find ACD's there. And it would be surprisingly for a shelter to have none as many people give them up because they ae not an 'easy' dog. Just keep searching your local shelters, actually go there and look. And look for backyard breeders. Typically I wouldn't suggest them because people are just making a profit and breeding unnecessarily. But ACD's are not a very popular breed and if you find an ad in the paper with them, they typically run 50- 125 dollars. The owners are not looking for a profit, they just had a litter for whatever reason and are looking for good homes. So shelters and as bad as it may sound, I would suggest a backyard breeder in a newspaper for them. You aren't going to find many breeders for ACD's and especially one breeding bad dogs just for profit. Oh. and make sure you get a look at the mother and preferrably the brother or older sibilings if there are any. That way you have an idea of how it will turn out.

puppy's will eat very fast I have a 4 month old Australian Shepard he is 25 pounds also i feed him a cup of food three times a day like meals if not he'll eat to fast and get sick so 3 cups would be about right right now but as he gets older hell need close to 5 cups a day ones a day so slowly change the feeding time to once a day that is best you don't want to fed him to much because then you'll run into other problems in the future but for now that is fine

why are you giving him hamburger/rice mixed with the dry food? If you are feeding him a food that is of top quality then he does not need the other food you are feeding him. check with your vet to see if the food that are feeding him now is of the right type.

dogs don't have the same function as humans to know that they're 'full' and so will keep eating regardless of how much they've already eaten - it relates back to being in the wild where they must eat whenever they can because they don't know when they're going to next get food. there would be australian cattle dog forums on the net where you could probably ask other owners however, its probably best to ask the vet when your dog is getting its check ups and vaccines and stuff - as they grow they're going to need different amounts and so on. good luck having a dog is awesome!
