Do Not fish it out!!

If enough of the chip is sticking up so that you can grab it without touching the dip, then fish it out.

Otherwise, leave it in there. Maybe push it down to the bottom of the dip with another chip, so that no one can see it.

First of all I would have put a little dip on a plate of my own. If I had dropped a chip in the "community" dip, if it was sticking out enough to grap it, carefully pull it out. If not, use a utensil to retrieve it.

either use another chip to get it out or you could just give all your friends those dip spreader thingies for christmas and not have to worry about dropping things in the dip again 8)

I think it would be a really nice gesture to pick it out of there. there might be straws or even a spoon that could be used to take the chip out of the dip . leaving it there makes it awkward for the next person that is going to be using it.
I believe it would be a matter of courtesy and something really nice to do instead of leaving it there.
My preference would be to try to take it out.

It is best to tell your hostess and let her spoon it out, don,t go fishing around, someone else may assume you are trying to get a bug or something out and not want to eat the dip.

Use a fork or another chip to fish it out. Don't fish it out with your fingers!

Worse to leave it. Use a fork to fish it out if it drowned.

What I do is grab a bigger chip and fish it out with it.

NEVER EVER grab it out with your fingers. And don't just leave it in there. Both are just nasty.
