I normally don't eat anything that falls on the floor, unless there is a sink with running water ready for me to vigorously wash away the dirt from the food. I am very picky about what I eat and how it looks when I eat it. If say an apple fell on the floor and bruised itself, I would have to get rid of the bruised area completely before I would eat it.

You have at least 20 seconds to eat the foods that fell on the floor after that forget it, the bacteria is there and can accumulate quickly.

Throw it away immediately. As soon as it hits the floor, it becomes a magnet for every germ and slice of bacteria down there.
Rinsing it off doesn't work either, because there are germs that won't be bothered by a little water coming from a tap.

My daughter tells me that there is a 3 second rule, but that this can be extended to 15 seconds in the mornings as everyone knows everything works slower in the morning.
Mind you, this is the same daughter who is adamant that red cars go faster and that chocolate is a basic food group and can be used as a meal.....

The 6 second rule applies, but you may have to be quicker than that to get the food before the dog does!

Right when food falls on the floor, germs and bacteria adhere to it right away. Just throw the piece of food away. You could do without it.
