from january 1st 2005 it became illegal in the UK for any untrained person to carry out major electrical work in a domestic property (whether they have the owners consent or not). this includes the installation of high tension circuits such as showers/cookers etc. although this does not include the installation of spurs and renewing existing cabling etc provided the work is carried out on the ring-main/lighting circuits (26 amps and 10 amps respectively).
