Sleep Talking (Somniloquoy) has been attributed to stress or neurologic conditions. Siezure disorders and mental diseases have been flagged as possible causes. Sleep Talking is closely related to Sleep Walking. Both are caused by an irregulary in the REM (dreaming) and NREM(Non dreaming) sleep cycles. In a normal case the brain stem shuts down must motor movement when a person enters the REM part of sleep. In the case of a Sleep Talker or Walker, these cycles overlap.

Sleep Talking and Sleep Walking tends to run in families. It is best to aviod alchohol or other nervous system depressants, as it will make it worse. Make sure you get plenty of sleep. Being overly tired or stressed will only make it worse.

The cause isn't clear but it seems to be more common when a person is experiencing high levels of stress, or is ill for another reason. It may also be linked to sleep terrors in children, and sleep apnoea in adults.

One famous sleep talker is Dion McGregor, a man who became something of an underground celebrity when his roommate Michael Barr recorded his nightly soliloquies (which were often hilariously detailed), which were then released as a series of albums in the 60's.

I have got it really bad too. I keep a record of everything I wake myself up saying or other people tell me I say. Just for shits & giggles. Great question though.
