Boring, boring, boring recipe off the can of fried onions. This is much better and doesn't take much more time:
1 18ounce package frozen haricot vert green beans (or 2 10ounce bags young frozen whole green beans)
1/2 of a 10 ounce bag frozen pearl onions
1/4 lb bacon
2 cans cream of mushroom soup
1 can milk
1 small can French Fried Onion (French's or Durkee)
1 t Worcestershire
dash pepper
Chop the bacon and saute it in a skillet until fairly crispy. Add the pearl onions and brown for a few minutes. Add the soup, milk, Worcestershire and pepper. Stir in the green beans and transfer to a baking casserole dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Top with French Fried Onions and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes.
I've tried making a version of green bean casserole wtih fresh mushrooms where you basically make your own cream of mushroom soup - it doesn't add much to the flavor and it's a lot of work. Stick to the canned soup if you can stomach the sodium - or use the Healthy Request brand of Campbells.

This has been our family's favorite for ages.
1 lb french cut green beans (frozen)
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour
1 1/4 cups milk, heated
1/2 tsp Colman's prepared mustard (dry mustard)
1/2 cup grated Cheddar cheese
Salt
Freshly ground pepper
1/4 cup blanched slivered almonds
Parmesan Cheese
Paprika
Cook the green beans according to package. Drain. Melt the butter in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Stir in the flour and cook, stirring constantly, until the paste cooks and bubbles a bit, but don't let it brown — about 2 minutes. Add the hot milk, continuing to stir as the sauce thickens. Bring it to a boil. Add dry mustard, cheese, salt and pepper to taste, lower the heat, and cook, stirring for 2 to 3 minutes more. Combine sauce and green beans, stir in almonds. Pour into 1 1/2 qt. casserole. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese & paprika on top. Cook at 350 until edges begin to brown and sauce is bubbly.

I like buying the Cambell's Cream of Mushroom soup and adding that to the green beans. Then I top the beans with the Fried onions and bake it in the oven for 30 minutes. You can add salt or pepper when your done!

I usually don't "put down" a question, but I'd have to say the best recipe doesn't have mushroom soup and french-fried onions in it - I can't stand that stuff! (sorry)
I like green beans with bacon and onions.
