If you attempted to put an exact date on the start of Ramazan (pronounced Ramadan) you would not succeed. This is because the date is set by a lunar schedule. It is supposed to begin on the first day of the new moon but when the determining party that announces it cannot see the sky due to clouds or storms, then it starts on the first day that the sky can be clearly seen by the determining party which is located somewhere in the middle east.

Ramadan in 2007 will start on Thursday, the 13th of September and will continue for 30 days until Friday, the 12th of October.
It's not exactly a fast, you can only eat when the sun is down.

It is the fasting month and the start and end date varies as it is based on the lunar calendar. I cannot provide more details as I am not a muslim. However, I do know that the local mosques announces the start and end of the daily fast. During the day, I believe practising muslims fast and do not eat. In tropical countries, this can be difficult - not much physical way can be carried out.

Make friends with the sisters in your local Muslim community and learn alot from them. And listen to lecures from speakers like Yusuf Estes and Abdul Malik. They are excellent speakers, have lots of knowledge, and are very inspiring. And again LOTS OF WELCOMES!
