Basically I just want to know what ID I need to take with me to the French consulate - the website is useless and doesn't provide any clues at all.

Also, does anyone know how long it takes to actually get the new passport - I seem to remember it only taking a few mins last time but I can't be sure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is from experience of renewing a british passport abroad, so most of it should apply.
If you go to the embassy, as oppossed to the consulate, they should be able to do it there that day. you will need 4 pictures, proof of address, possibly a copy of local bank statement, birth certificate, and current passport, and some patience, embassies are not quick places, most only open in the morning, so get there early!

you have to bring your old passport! if you do not have it - get it / or report it stolen if you lost it!!! at the embassy or consulate if you do not live in London. It will take a few weeks to be issued a new one. Make sure you know all of the regulations for what the photo should look like!!
