Suss out your options. If the cash has been in your account all this time, you might as well pay it back as one whole sum. If you didn't realise you were overpaid and accidentally spent it, you're still legally obliged to pay it back but they'll have to take your circumstances into account before telling you the minimum rate for repayment. I probably just stated the obvious but if I didn't, I hope I put your mind at rest.

I would just stick it in a savings account until they notice, then pay it back. They may not notice, I got overpaid By £2000 and they never noticed, that was 7 years ago.

My brother paid to have electricity fitted in his farmhouse, it cost £7000 as they had to lay a lot of new cables etc, he never got billed for it.

Hang on to it, until they notice.

What makes you say that you were overpaid? Has someone told you this or are you presuming? Maybe you were entitled to it. If it is a mistake by your employer I think that you will find that you are entitled to keep the money. How come you did not notice it earlier?
I think that maybe there is a bit more that you could tell us.

Thats a lot of money to be overpaid. If you received it from the government , you would probably have to pay it all back in one go.

Talk to your boss or your HR department immediately. Then make arrangements with them about how to pay it back.

Might be best to call the Inland Revenue and ask them? (sorry, I know if I were you I'd hit me, but its all I can comeup with that seems sensible)
