My parents were from Missouri and Kansas as were their parents and they called them "NiggerToes". As a child I never thought the term was derogatory or an insult to African-Americans, just a way of identifying a certain nut in the can of mixed nuts. My Dad really liked them, it wasn't like he wanted to remove them and throw them out, I think thats just the way a generation was raised. Unfortunately, the word when used by whites, has taken a whole different meaning amongst African-Americans. I like to think the word has no color reference today and has evolved in the American dialect to mean: a person (of ANY color) who does cheap, shoddy work. One who does anothers dirty work without any respect or deserving of any. I do not believe the word has any color conotation except when used in mixed company. I know my African-American friends use the word daily and frequently, as on the hit TV show "The Wire". I also understand the history associated with the word and therefore do no use it, but also do not think it carries with it the significance a lot of people would want it to, except in cases like Michael Richards deliberately using it to insult and provoke.
