Why kill them just because we are celebrating such an important event in history? What is the connection and how would one justify it?

That is one significant question.
Why indeed?
Animals are suffering at the hands of humans for no fault of theirs.
They are losing their natural habitat, being hunted, killed ,eaten,de-skinned,and what not.
While their is so much that can be said on this subject I will only stick to the pretext of your question which in a broader way questions non-vegetarianism.
Why do we need to kill and eat animals when we can easily get more nutrition from vegetation?
It has been scientifically proven that our intestines are meant to digest vegetarian food and not meat.
We get more energy from veg than non-veg food the evidence to support which can be easily found if we study the energy levels in the food chain more closely.
Non-vegetarianism or killing turkeys to celebrate christmas or anything that involves butchering animals must stop.
Early man hunted and ate animals as he only followed the jungle rule.
But times have changed.
We are living in cities, not jungles we call ourselves civilized so shouldnt the jungle rule end for us?
In India, the custom of sati,or the burning of a living woman on the pyre of her husband existed. But not now. That has been changed.
What was considered sacred then is a ban now.
If a change can be brought on customs that are cruel on humans
then why not change customs that are cruel on animals?

Hmm let me guess your an Animal rights supporter, most likely a Petard trying to bash your beliefs on to other people ? btw do you know within the last month another 2 PETA staff members got arresting for stealing a dog off the road and claiming it was a stay. It was in fact a animal control workers dog, so it was more when well cared for. An eye witness reported the thief after they had seen 2 people take a radio transmitter collar off the dog (used to locate it as its was legally allow to roam off the lease) and dumped it in the street. Anyway back to turkeys, the reason why so many are killed because in the old days then people where poor they used to have a turkey because it was a special thing. As time went onwards it has just become one of those things, and having live in a country for 10 months there i don't know that half the food is and living on a high plant oil diet, I looking forward to a less fattening x-mas lunch.

Well besides Thanksgiving (which is America only) and Christmas, turkeys have it pretty easy for the rest of the year and get through life pretty much genocide-free. Now chickens, cows, pigs have it bad all year long!!

You like turkeys that much, think about the chickens, cows and pigs that are slaughtered throughout the rest of the year. How do we justify that?

It's called a FREAKIN' FOOD CHAIN! I see animal lovers are down with animals killing other animals for their survival. They call it the circle of life as quoted from 'The Lion King'. I sense a double standard here. If you are that radical then I assume you've already stopped eating plants such as vegetables and fruits. Fruits and nuts are the offspring of trees...they are living beings too! Please don't hurt the feelings of trees by eating their young. Enjoy your water!
