Damping means some form of energy dissipation.
Damping is any effect, either deliberately engendered or inherent to a system, that tends to reduce the amplitude of oscillations of an oscillatory system.....(source Wikipedia)

A lot of day to Day applications require damping. In circuit design it is essential to build circuits which have an nderdamped response in order to achieve stable circuits.
