Ok..... I see a lot of people have attempted to give you a lot of advice here and I agree with some of it.....however.....do NOT attempt to make your child WARMER.....the dry heat is what is causing her cough, especially since it's only at night. What do you use to heat the room? Gas, electric heat?
I have asthma but only have real problems at night and in the winter. First off, of course, you should take her to a doctor to see if she needs an antibiotic and they can give you a much stronger cough syrup.
Try not dressing her so warmly, but don't let her get cold either. I hope that the "steamer" that you are using is a cool mist humidifier and not a warm air vaporizer. You need to make the air that she's breathing in cooler. The dry warm winter heat is drying out her bronchial tubes and irritating them.
Inadequate humidification during cold weather is one of the major causes of respiratory infections. The heating season causes many people to experience repeated attacks of winter colds. Winter is blamed for these problems, but the actual cause is dryness, which effects the membranes of the nose, throat and bronchial tubes. Relative humidity also has a significant effect on controlling the occurrence of airborne infections.
So keep your home, especially her bedroom, a little cooler and place a cool mist humidifier in her room and keep the filter changed as needed. Good luck to you.

How long has she been doing this? It could be that she has a chest infection or that she suffers from minor asthma which is worse at night. Try raising her upper body with a pillow so that when she does cough, it's easier for mucus to come up. Some children do get persistent coughs, but it's always a good idea to get medical advice.

take her to the Dr`s my son was like this just after his 1st b/day, they said it was just a night time cough, it got worse so i took him back they gave him some medicine it didn`t work! took him back they wanted to try him on something else i felt like he was being used as a Guinea pig so i got a second opinion and he had a cough which is associated with asthma. he got prescribed a blue inhaler which helped but since then it as got worse. when it is really cold during the night that is when it is really bad we have to make sure he is covered up in his duvet, try buying the all in one sleep suits i have just found some for my son now aged 4 they are keeping him warm even with out his duvet over him which as reduced the coughing so it might be worth explaining to the Dr`s the symptoms you`r daughter as. also try buying the anti-allergy bedding they also recommend hoovering and polishing everyday although this is expensive and time consuming it does help, your Dr can also send your daughter for a skin prick test to see if dust might is a reason or if not then what is.

The chest is often where a cold finishes up, especially when the throat was bad. Night time is usually worse, because she is lying down, and the tickle gets worse.
A little home remedy in case you are worried about using medicine (and there are dosage limits, but this can be taken as often as you want), is vinegar and sugar mixed together. (Normal malt vinegar will do). Sip from a teaspoon whenever the tickle begins. Sounds gross, but it has a marvellous effect of stopping the tickle that starts the cough.
I grew up on that stuff, and I give it to my kids. Free cough medicine!

i have 2 daughters and they both have the same thing. My youngest is 18 months and she coughs till she is sick - usually flem - i started to rub vicks on there chest and back and just a little behind there ears, also have you heard of Karvol capsules, you cut the end off then it's liquid and you squirt it on there pillow case, if you have small children put it on some tissue out of reach.
There is a new vicks vapour plug that has just come out in shops, you plug it in a plug socket and it realeases vapours. I would also make sure the doctor has checked them out properly for asthma or chest infection. buy some Cough medicine.

I suggest that you take her to a doctor. Don't panic, just take her to see a doctor as soon as possible. It's important that you take her to a doctor.
Find out if she's allergic to anything in her room. Maybe the medicine you're giving her isn't really good for her.
Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coughing
Your kid might be asthmatic. Read the entire article. It's not long at all. It's very informative, and simple to understand. Also, scroll down to the bottom, where you'll find the "External Links". I hope this helps.

Take your daughter to the Gp because night time coughing can be a sign of asthmaThe usual symptoms of asthma are:
coughing
wheezing
shortness of breath
tightness in the chest.
Not everyone will get all of these symptoms. Some people experience them from time to time; a few people may experience these symptoms all the time.

Coughing that occurs at night and not during the day is often asthma, you should get this checked out.
Also reducing dairy products can help clear cattarh after a cold, but not long term without consulting a dietician.

same as my 5 year old. we had to put an all night electric blanket on her bed, but she was still coughing through the night. we tried lots of different medicines, but nothing really worked. we took her to the doctor last week and hes given her an inhaler. it has helped a bit, but the bouts of coughing still continue.

have you taken her to the doctors-sounds like she may have developed a chest infection.
vicks vapour rub on her chest and back will help ,as will olbas oil on a tissue near her bed.a hot water bottle for her chest will help.
i would discontinue the steamer as the moist air will make her worse.
i would also try building her up a bit ,a good vitamin c supplement, childrens chewable echinacea for her immune system strength.cut back on the dairy products until she is better as milk is muscus producing and will take longer to clear if she has catarr.
but i would take her back to the doctors first and foremost.
hope shes better soon :)
