Firstly, anyone can be a medium, but (as with everything) some people are more or less talented in the area. This does not exclude you from developing the talent, it simply means that you have to work harder in order to achieve the same results.
An average basketball player, who plays every day for 3 hours, can eventually match (or at least challenge) a relatively talented player who plays only occasionally.
To learn how to be a medium, you have to learn to be a GREAT listener. That means developing an open mind (one cannot hear things as they are if one refuses to listen). Secondly, you have to learn about people, because what motivates physical people (their thoughts, dreams, desires) will help you gain insight into what motivates non-flesh entities. The desire for happiness is universal, but how and why each of us pursue it determines through whom and when we will find it.
Also, you must read up on everything and anything that has to do with other mediums. If you were inspired by the tv show, read up on everything about the person upon whom it was based. Through them, they will lead you to other resources, and still other resources.
This is probably the most important aspect; to be a medium means to be wholly oneself. One cannot be a medium if one is attempting to deny or escape from oneself, because oneself becomes the vehicle through which the messages are received. Imagine trying to get mail at the same time refusing to greet the mailperson or have a mailbox. Be yourself, follow your own inner self, and the spirits whom you can help will be drawn to that energy.

You know I see all these answers that others have posted on here, and some of them are from people telling you that it is evil to be a medium. That is ridiculous. God gives us gifts to help humanity and the world and this is one of them! This is something that you are born with. It is rare for someone to actually train themselves unless it is already inside them. A medium can communicate with Spirits in one way or many. For most, this is not a choice, therefore it is not a sin to be a medium. However, what you do with this gift is up to you. If you use it just to make money or to hurt others than perhaps you are making it a sin. But if you use this gift to help others, than you are actually serving as an instrument of God....Okay I know I did more than answer the question you asked, but I just had to clear up a few things too.

Not everyone can be it seems to be a gift for a selected few some are stronger than others. Get hold of some books on the subject would be of help, from personal experience most young children seem able to pick up on things older ones don't my daughter could as can my mother and one of my sisters myself i have had some incidents happen but social and religious teachings and conditioning tends to over power an otherwise inherent or natural ability.

medium is a size of how big a man is. there maybe 3 sizes --large, medium and small. how could you be in the medium size if you are very small. wait until you garow older to attain the medium size or large or big size

you could tell by whether or not you are constantly feeling other presences, seeing other entities, or even recieve thoughts and impressions when you feel or see these entities. Then you probably are a medium and just have to decide whether to ignore it or harness and work your talent.

I'm a large the last time I checked. I used to be a medium but then I quit smokin!
If you mean you want to talk to dead folk then it would stand to reason that you should go talk to them. If they talk back you would be a medium. If they don't maybe you is a small!

everyone i believe has potential yes ...
but its like saying everyone can play piano , but not everyone will be a concert pianist
it takes a lot of study and development to fine tune things
and the most difficult part is to know that you are ...
knowing the difference between imagination and spirit ...
but that all boils down to trusting yourself enough to say what you say and hear and passing those messages on to be validated
as that is the reason why spirit come .... to pass messages to loved ones
so validation is of the utmost importance
anyone can say i have your granny here .... but i want to know what granny looks like , what she says , what she is wearing , what she knows about the family etc
only by getting this information will you know you have spirit
