The advantages of a diplomatic passport vary from country to country, and of course they don't work in your own country, but in general they serve as a kind of buffer between you and the law but that doesn't mean your free to act against it.

When going through customs, it means your bags can't be searched and there's usually a line specifically for holders of diplomatic passports but you still have to get stamped and everything.

With a diplomatic passport you can also get passes to meet people as they arrive beyond the customs gate and can meet people the moment they get off the plane.

Being a diplomat simply means that you're a representative of your country and anyone who acts against you is seen as acting against your country (hence why police won't touch you unless they have permission from the higher ups).

My Dad's been a diplomat for about 15 years now and only just retired recently. Although it's unfortunate that some people DO abuse these advantages, they are put into place for very good reason. My dad has had to go to places where he had to be accompanied by bodyguards and guard dogs wherever he went and many countries simply wouldn't be able to deal with each other if it wasn't for the assurances that their representatives wouldn't be acted against.

No - you are still subject to a customs inspection, but the queues at airports are shorter.

Diplomatic immunity is separate to a diplomatic passport. However in my country if you commit a crime under diplomatic immunity the Foreign Minister has the option of waiving your diplomatic immunity (causing you to face the music overseas). You could also get investigated by your own country's police and duly prosecuted.

The advantages are you can do anything you want to do and not be punished for it. It's like a license to be a spoiled child all your life.
