The OnDemand Voice Tutorial said that you're supposed to avoid eating dairy before you sing, but it didn't say why. Does it cause bloating...? Cramps...? I assume that eating dairy interferes with the quality of the sound somehow...?

Some people do not eat dairy when they sing. Some people say that eating dairy before singing is an old wives tale. My daughter sings professionally, and tells me that sometimes dairy does coat her throat and makes her a bit more phlematic, but not always. Usually she will lay off the dairy until after she performs, and then indulge later. She also stays away from nutty things like granola bars.....

You are right that the eating of dairy interferes with the quality of sound as dairy has a tendency to create mucus in the throat.

Dairy generally causes your throat to become coated with mucous, becuase dairy foods in general are creamy. This can cause your throat to stick and garble your voice when you are singing, much like when you sound different when you are sick and your throat needs clearing a lot.

My old chorus teacher used to tell us this too and it is true, she also warned us about other foods and drink such as soda pop since it also can produce similar problems.

by making use of all means, consume something - you do no longer desire to be easy-headed! in simple terms consume something clever- no longer something which will *repeat* on you, or reason phlegm and coughing. by using fact of this human beings stay way from *finished fat* dairy - easy or skim is in all probability wonderful. specific, sticky issues would be complicated - long when you swallow them, your throat nonetheless keeps a reflex that makes you uncomfortable. consume something with protein, some carbs for staying capacity, and WATER. some human beings like tea - coffee is in all probability no longer a physically powerful theory. And if tea sends you to the bathing room - then stick to water. good luck consisting of your overall performance - and good nutrients is area of the coaching.

Yes. Dairy products thickens the mucous in your throat and causes you to either have to swallow more, or clear your throat more. It interferes with the quality of sound your vocal chords make.
