Not only have you got the energy issue, but some people, well most people in the UK, just haven't got taste and dont exactly try very hard to hide the hideous cables that look like a spider web across their homes, i have seen some states in the past couple of weeks.
Whats worse, is the houses with most lights are in areas where people are housed who are on benefits with no jobs, so their lights and decorations are mine then!

I totally agree...people spend (waste) money on these rubbish lights (which are made by slaves in china) then they consume energy and are probably fraudulently completing their tax credit forms as well. They are also the ones that overload their supermarket trolleys just before Christmas believing the end of the world is nigh... and they are so obese they can only just squeeze past the checkout ! People who can afford to illuminate the ouside of their houses in such an extavragant way should be forced to pay an extra energy tax, (after all they are easy to spot !!!)

For the sake of a few bright light for a few days in a year they are a great delight. It would be far better if big stores cut down on their display lighting all through the year and this would make a big impact. If every store could cut down their electricity consumption by just 1kw per day the savings in carbon emissions would be enormous.
Good question though so have a great Christmas.

Well in the scheme of things they probably don't use more power in the couple of weeks they are on than you waste during the year doing completely pointless things with your computer, like asking questions which can't possibly change anything on Yahoo answers for example. And their lights give people a lot of pleasure.
don't get me wrong, I agree with you that we should all do what we can to conserve the world's resources, I'm just not sure Christmas lights are the first things we should worry about.

It is definitely a new idea and possibly ex-America. We have been abroad for a number of years and returned to find houses displaying lights outside. We were amazed and feel as you do that if global warming is being advertised everywhere why has no one (until your question) queried this new fangled idea. They do look nice but I find it over the top and hopefully this new idea will pass and Christmas will revert to decorated Xmas trees indoors.

You have a lot bigger worries about global warming from the HUGE SUV's driving around out there than Christmas lights.
There are huge problems with pollution going on like power boats, off the road vehicles, oil spills and irresponsible corporations out there that are causing Way more problems than a few low wattage lights.

those are reliable innovations you have! possibly you may desire to tie a Christmas bow to the mirror? regularly my family individuals does Christmas adorning by utilising colour (ie. gold and silver, blue and silver, pink and green, and so on.) Like final twelve months we did gentle blue and silver, so we've been given white and silver embellishes for a smaller tree and our previous classic embellishes for the different tree. an incredible thought is taking a glass tile, one which you would be able to placed issues in that's style of like a container formed glass tile element, and you wrap a bow such as you may a latest. then you definately can placed a candle or Christmas lights in it. yet another classic: placed candles interior the residing house windows.

It seems to be an American tradition that many people are copying now in Europe. It's like having pumpkins at Halloween, where did that come from? The States. People see these things in movies and copy them.

You don't have to use lights to decorate outside. We used garland and bows for years. I think they were Eco friendly too. My mom is detailed that way. We didn't use lights because we couldn't afford the electric bill, but she still wanted us to have fun decorating when we were children. :)
