The state of dream is similar to the waking state. When you are awake there is an endless stream of thoughts going through your mind. For a normal human being. it's very difficult to concentrate on a particular thought because all your sense organs are active and the brain is continously processing signals from the sense organs. So unless you put conscious effort to concentrate (for example solving a math problem) you tend to skip from one thought to another.

When you are sleeping most of the sense organs are inactive and if you are having a dream (which is nothing but thoughts based on the your past experiences, your desires etc, but in an exagerrated manner since you don't feel limited by your sense organs), it is easy to follow a stream of thought for a long time, making you think the dream never ends.

There is a point in your sleep when you stop having thoughts and then you go to the deep sleep, which is really what refreshes you during the sleep.

yeah there is nothing more annoying , particularly if you are enjoying the subconscious state we all have when we are dreaming , sadly ( but gratefully ) we have to waken up , and i suppose gather more data for another interesting episode of the mind . good luck .
